Why world karate tested its coaches before the youth championships
Before the 2026 youth worlds in Bielsko-Biala, WKF coaches sat a rules briefing and separate kata and kumite exams. What a student in Kolhapur can take from it.
The youth world championships in Poland did not open with a final. They opened with a test for the coaches.
On 13 October 2026 the World Karate Federation put coach accreditation, a rules briefing, and two examinations on the programme in Bielsko-Biala. Bouts at the World Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Championships were scheduled after that, from 14 October 2026 to 18 October 2026. For a student in Kolhapur who follows karate in India and abroad, the order is the news. At this level, the coach is examined before the athlete is.
What was on the clock
The first official bulletin places the coach programme on 13 October 2026. Its event schedule heads that block as Tuesday. A later table in the same PDF labels the date Monday. A calendar shows 13 October 2026 was a Tuesday. The weekday word in the PDF does not agree with itself, so that label stays unconfirmed. The clock times below are from the event schedule.
These are the Arena Park sessions on that schedule:
- Coach programme accreditation, 8:00–9:00
- Accredited coach briefing, 9:00–10:30
- Kumite coach examination, 10:30–11:15
- Kata coach examination, 11:15–12:00
- Coach programme results, 14:00–15:00
On 12 October 2026 the bulletin lists registration and payment for the coach programme from 10:00–18:00 at Arena Park. It also lists a draw and coach meeting on 13 October 2026 from 16:00–17:30 at the City Hall press room. The news report gives no clock time for the meeting of more than 350 coaches, so a match to that 16:00 slot is unconfirmed.
Who ran the programme
The WKF report dated 13 October 2026 says the programme reviewed competition rules. Mohamed Elhosieny, chair of the WKF Technical Commission, headed it. Coaches came from around the world. How many sat the examination is unconfirmed.
Later that day the coaches taking part in the event met again. More than 350 of them joined. Mohamed Elhosieny headed that meeting with Marton Falusi, chair of the WKF Organising Commission.
Antonio Espinós, president of the WKF, said highly qualified coaches are essential at an age-group championship, because future stars are still developing and coaches set the example. He expected the coaches in Bielsko-Biala to show karate's values and to help build a positive environment for young athletes.
Exam questions, pass marks, pass rates, and the names of people who passed are unconfirmed. No source here names a coach from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, or India. Whether anyone from the city was present is unconfirmed.
Kata and kumite are separate exams
The bulletin does not treat coaching as one badge. The minimum it states for a coach at this World Junior Championship is a WKF Certified Kumite and/or Kata Coach certification. Only a coach who already holds the WKF Accredited Coach level is described as having access to that certified exam.
Kumite is scheduled at 10:30–11:15. Kata follows at 11:15–12:00. Results for both were listed at 14:00–15:00.
Registration ran from 14 July 2026 at 12:00 GMT to 29 September 2026 at 12:00 GMT. Payment had to go through Sportdata by PayPal. Onsite registration for the course was not accepted.
The printed fees are for that course, not for a class in Kolhapur. The briefing is listed at 300 euro, the kata exam at 350 euro, and the kumite exam at 300 euro. Each one also lists a late surcharge of the same amount.
The bulletin says "and/or". A kumite certificate does not by itself certify kata. A coach can hold one, or both. That split is what a student can use. The euro amounts belong to a world course.
The field those coaches walked into
A WKF preview on 9 October 2026 says more than 2,000 athletes from 114 countries had registered, and calls that a record for this age-group world championship.
The hall is Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa Pod Dębowcem, ul. Karbowa 26, 43-300 Bielsko-Biala. Eliminations were scheduled from 14 October 2026 to 16 October 2026, 09:00 to 20:30 local time (GMT+2). Medal bouts were set for 17 October 2026, 10:00 to 19:00, and 18 October 2026, 10:00 to 15:45. The opening ceremony was at 18:00 on 15 October 2026. The preview names an elimination and repechage format.
This article does not use bout scores or medal names. A result that is not in the WKF result service is unconfirmed. The preview said the full event would stream on the WKF YouTube channel, a first for this championship. Whether a replay is still open is unconfirmed.
What to take into a Kolhapur class
The coaches' week was a rules review, then an exam. Ask which contact rule fits your age group. This article does not restate the scoring text. Until you read your division's rule with your coach, that detail is unconfirmed.
Kata and kumite had different exams, one after the other, so give each one its own block of time. A safe practice note: keep a partner drill at the speed your coach sets, step out when control slips, and leave harder contact for a supervised match. That is a training note, not a medical claim.
Antonio Espinós tied the coach's example to the environment around young athletes. In class that is the bow, the way a senior speaks to a beginner, and a correction that teaches the technique again. A WKF card is the world version of a habit a local class can already practise.
Whether coaches at SK Martial Arts hold a WKF accredited or certified card is unconfirmed here. Ask at the academy. The same question travels to any state or national event you watch in India: did kata and kumite each get their own time? Which Indian coaches sat this course is unconfirmed.
FAQs
01 Did any coach from India sit these exams?
The report says coaches came from around the world, and that more than 350 joined the later meeting. It lists no countries and no names. An entry from India, Maharashtra, or Kolhapur is unconfirmed.
02 Can a student in Kolhapur sit the WKF coach exam?
The bulletin limits the certified exam to coaches who already hold the WKF Accredited Coach level. That window closed at 12:00 GMT on 29 September 2026. A student still on the class syllabus is outside that description. How a coach in India enters a later course is unconfirmed in these pages.
03 Does this change belt tests at SK Martial Arts?
No source here says the academy changed grading because of the exams in Poland. Grading follows the syllabus your coach gives you. A link between a WKF coach certificate and a Kolhapur belt test is unconfirmed.
